Tirumoolar is one of the earliest among the 63 nayanmars. By western references he is considered to have lived in AD but many tamil historians date him to BC. We say that Saivam was flourishing during more than 2000 years but its is languishing now. Why? The principles and the base of Saivam is in Tirumoolar’s Tirumandiram. The principle tenet is Siva in The One and The Ultimate and this brings clarity to us. This is based purely on science and given with scientific evidence unlike other faiths which consider science as separate and do not have answers to even basic scientific questions and facts. But we do not know the existence of neither this text nor realize that the everyday traditions and culture which are based on Saivam.
Siva as Vaitheeswaran, The Healer
Vaishnavam which has 25 tatuvams is encompassed inside the 36 tatuvams of Saivam. Vaishnavam is not separate from Saivam but a part of it. The maya is above the 25 purusha tatuvams of Vaishnavam. Saivam goes beyond both 25 Vaishnava tatuvams and maya as well. Buddhism and Vaishnavism say suffering is overcome when maya is removed. One of the most important distinction between Saivam and all other faiths is that Saivam mentions ignorance as the root cause whereas others mention desire. That is why Siva is called Vaitheeswaran meaning The Healer.
For a snake bite, the blood flow is stopped to prevent the poison from spreading to the other parts of the body.
This is to make us realize the root cause and understand how to attain liberation. This is from the Tirukural by Thiruvalluvar Deva Nayannar and his words espouse the Saivam principles.
Actions and underlying purpose
Tirumoolar had transmuted into a body of a cowherd who had died due to snake bite. But the question arises whether he died because of the snake bite or that he had exhausted his karma hence left the world? There is a purpose to everything that happens in the world. The action is visible to the naked eye, but the purpose is invisible. The action was the snake bite, and the purpose was the exhaustion of his karma. The worldly people are attached to the visible actions whereas Saiva Siddhanthis are attached to the invisible purpose. When Tirumoolar transmutes into the cowherd’s body, the poison is removed simply by the force of his penance. All the accumulated karmas over births can be removed simply by feeding once, an original Saivaite saint. But the problem is not only in finding one these days but also be blessed to have such an opportunity.
Possessions and experiences
Everything is given to us by Siva Peruman, but we claim proprietorship over everything. We simply forget that we came empty handed and we leave empty handed. If we help someone and they talk bad behind our backs, then we will stop helping that person. Whereas if that person is our child, we continue to help them because of our love. Similarly, Siva Peruman does the same but with infinite compassion. As our compassion for Siva increases, our sufferings decrease. One of the best gifts is to remember Siva in every moment. Even these divine instructions were received from Siva by tirumoolar.
Siva Peruman and Internal Worship
The experience of Siva called as Siva Anandam or Siva Anubhavam and is experienced in 2 ways by saints. One is via the physical senses, the beauty of this world and realize Siva in them called Padamukthi. The second is being apart from all this and experiencing in the astral plane called Paramukthi. Once a saint and his nephew were on a pilgrimage by foot. On the way the saint realized that he had forgotten his worship items. His nephew was more than willing to go all the way back and get the items. So, the saint was waiting under a tree and the local villagers who were passing by, started to gather around him. They asked if he needed anything to eat. Look at the way people are treating elders and saints. This was in the 17th century and not long back. The saint said that he does not eat without doing worship to God. The villagers were sad and insisted that he at least drink some milk. He then started to do worship by singing to God called as worship at the soul level. He sings that he went to the orchard to pick flowers but saw Siva in them instead. Hence, he did not have the heart to pluck the flowers and hurt Siva.Siva will come wherever you think He is, if done with complete devotion and a pure heart. The only question is that are we ready to surrender with complete devotion and a pure heart.
Holy River Ganges and its meaning
The original Ganges is Siva ’s bliss which flows like the river. The River Ganges water that is bought in a small jar after a pilgrimage, is His holy feet. The water at home which is transformed into river Ganges using mantras is The worldly truth. Tirumoolar says that for saints like him, Siva has shown them His Holy Abode (Siva logam) on earth itself.
Siddhars and Saivam
Siddhars are those who have gained one of the 8 possible powers by virtue of their penance and worship to Siva.Saivam asks questioningly if all Siddhars are on the path to Siva since some of them stop once they get these supernatural powers. They are focused on doing transmutations and alchemy for the either material or other gains. They are called Avasiddhars. Also, not all Siddhars share or have shared their secrets with the world for various reasons.
Compassion and Siva Peruman
Saint Arunagirinathar sings that the people who are running behind materialistic things, when will they seek for Siva ’s grace. The reason why the Saivaite Saints compassion is huge because they have mixed with the infinite compassion of Siva. Oil and water do not mix, similarly only when we have compassion, will we mix with Siva ’s grace. Without compassion, there is no possibility to attain His holy feet. The stars twinkle in the night, but we do not see the starlight when the sun rises because it mixes with the sun light. This means that the starlight still exists but has mixed with the sunlight. Similarly, our compassion is like starlight when alone but becomes part of sun light when it mixes with Siva ’s grace. Siva cannot be understood using the five senses but only experience and realized.
Agamas is said to be in 3 levels. In the form of Tandirams or mantras or divine instructions. Tandiram is a wide field in which mantras are encompassed. And finally, divine instructions are encompassed within the mantras. The soul’s conscience is the reason why Sivam encompasses the soul within Himself. If the soul was inanimate, then there would be no need to do the same.
Our understanding of God
In our daily life, we have so many problems. And many of them continue for days altogether without any respite in sight. Amidst all this, the soul subconsciously searches for The Ultimate for realization. There is a fundamental difference between how we have understood God and how the canonical scriptures explain the understanding of God.
When someone saves us from trouble, we tell that god came in the form of that person and saved us. Hence our definition is that God is someone who saves us from our troubles. All our troubles manifest in the form of physical or mental harm. God gives us this body and then He says that realization is only if we let go of the same. This is confusing. How many hues or shades of a color, the eye can distinguish. That much finesse has been given to us through these physical senses. But why did He give all this if He meant us to give up this body? The physical body is a shirt that one changes often and is given by our parents.
Physical and astral body
How often do we even know what we have seen? how often do we often realize whether we have seen anything at all? Even though two persons see a tree, one does not remember whereas the other does. Why? Because one saw only with the physical body whereas the other saw with the astral body. The astral body is where the Manas resides and hence the second person registers the same at the Manas level. This means that the physical body and the underlying body must be in sync for the experience to register. The astral body is the one given by God whereas the physical body is the one given by parents. We discard and wear new shirts on every death and rebirth.
Those who commit suicide are only removing their physical body, but their astral body remains. That is a far worse scenario because our desires can be satisfied only with the physical body. Hence, they roam around without being able to satisfy their desires.
Traversing from the world, to Siva
We are doing yogam when we are with this physical body. Yogam means union. This type of yogam is called avayogam meaning union with worldly or transient pleasures. The other is Sivayogam which is union with Siva. When we are in avayogam, we are blind to Siva and we are blind to the world when in Sivayogam. One cannot directly jump from avayogam to Sivayogam because the gap is vast. It is difficult and the one that bridges the gap is called tavayogam. So, one goes from avayogam to Sivayogam via the bridge called tavayogam. Tavayogam consists of Sariyai, Kriyai and yogam.
Sariyai is doing temple worship, cleaning, lighting lamps, doing service to followers of Siva and other related activities. The simple truth is that doing service to Saints or followers of Siva bridges the gap much more easily. The yogam we get in Sariyai and Kriyai is different from the Sivayogam. It is not mandatory that the heart should be in sync with actions in Sariyai. Sariyai is worship at the external(puram) level.
In kriyai, worship is at the (agam)internal and (puram)external level and should unite in every activity. Worship in the form of reciting mantras, reciting the names of the lord etc.
The next is Yogam in which there are 8 different steps called Ashtanga yoga. Yogam is doing worship only internally.
But in simpler terms, Sariyai, kriyai and yogam are just indicators for the percentage of Love/compassion for God at each step. The higher one goes; the compassion increases exponentially.
Why the physical body?
Once the soul understands the compassion of the Lord, then the soul cannot be separated from God. We still think of Sivam like a supermarket where we can go and buy what we want. When we are linked with the body, we are haughty and all our lifestyles. When we fall unconsciously, we do not even remember or feel anything. Do we ask for a comfortable bed when unconscious? If we think deeply, all our experiences come from using this physical body. This is the gift of compassion that He has given us.
What is correct age for Temple worship?
Nearing death, the senses start failing one by one. Those who surrender to Siva wholeheartedly, will neither be afraid of death nor the suffering of death. We must warn Him that He bought us here and He must take us back without any suffering. Most people think that one should go to temples only when 2 or 3 of the 5 senses start malfunctioning. They think that old age is the ripe age to go to temples and do the yogams.
Having and experiencing are two different things
One can obtain everything from Siva at the physical level and that Is called Bhogam. But only when one experiences it with astral body that realization occurs and is called Yogam. Most people ask for wealth and other worldly pleasures. Even though they might get it, there is no guarantee that they will experience those pleasures. A person would have saved a lot of wealth but would not be able to experience it due to various circumstances. Do your duty with respect to family and society but always have Siva in the back of the mind.
A child going to the fair will look wide eyed at all the attractions but never let goes of her mother’s hand even for an instant. Similarly look at the world but never let go of Siva.
Opening one’s eyes
When people say that someone opened their eyes, what does it mean? It certainly does not mean the physical eyes but rather the realization which was until then not known to us even though it was in plain sight. This is because the soul cannot function by itself without the help of Siva. He dances in us so that we dance in this world. Due to ego, we can neither see nor realize the same. This ego can be removed only with the experiences in this world and hence, He has given us this body for the same.
To which they reply, “the separation of the life from the body.”
Tirumoolar – “So you agree there is life inside the body?”
Them – “Yes.”
Tirumoolar – “so what happens to the body after death?”
Them – “the body breaks down into each of the 5 elements.”
They looked stumped without a response.
Tirumoolar then explains – “Just as an inanimate object like the body mixes only with the 5 inanimate elements, the animate life will mix only with an animate Entity. That Animate Entity is Sivam and the life stays there temporarily until the next rebirth.”
The soul goes through the cycle of rebirth until it realizes the consciousness of Siva. Once it realizes Siva, it merges with Him in a state of bliss but still being separate from Him at the same time.
The attachment to the 5 senses makes the life/ soul desire the worldly pleasures. Just as someone who gets stuck in deep water because he does not know how to swim, the soul gets attached to the pleasures of the 5 senses. The soul wastes away its entire life drowning in these pleasures.
So, the question arises, “Where did the 5 senses originate from? Did the soul go looking for it?”
If I say, “God only gave those 5 senses” then the response will be “why did God give us the senses so that we drown in pleasures and then He comes and saves us via a guru?”
But who gave us the 5 senses? That is the important question. People get different physical bodies depending on what they must live through because of their karma. Even though we might be different physically, the soul is the same. That is why Holy saints look only at the soul and not at the physical body.
The souls are here to remove the ego to which they have attached themselves. Siva helps to remove the ego through His immeasurable compassion.
We all refuse to accept that we have egos in our day to day lives, even for simple things. That is why it is so difficult to remove oneself from ego. That is why Siva gently removes the ego through His Grace.
Some will ask, “Why does He not remove it all in one go? It would be easier for everyone. Isn’t He capable of doing it?”
Ego and free will
How can you help someone who needs help but does not want to be helped? There is this story of a pious man taking a boat to cross the river. The boatman asks if everyone on the boat knows swimming. All nod their heads except the pious man who replies God will save him if anything happens. Unfortunately, the boat capsizes in the middle of the river and others start swimming to save themselves. The boatman tries to save the pious man, but he pushes him away saying God will come to save him. Another person tries the same but to no avail. One more person tries but the pious man pushes him away as well. Finally, the pious man drowns and reaches another dimension where he asks God why He did not save him?
God replies, “You fool, I sent help thrice, but you rejected it all.”
God helps those who help themselves.
Appar sings beautifully about this with a reference to farming.
First the land must be tilled with the truth.
Secondly, the seeds of intent and will must be sowed.
Thirdly, the land must be de-weeded from corrupt thoughts and actions.
Fourth, the land must be watered with patience.
Finally, a fence of steadfastness and discipline must be put to protect the crop.
Those who do this, obtain Siva’s Grace.
The worldly experiences and the ego
Siva gives you what your soul desires because He knows there is no point in giving anything else which is not useful for the soul to reach maturity. It is like giving a gold-plated pen to a small child who does not need it. People are afraid that Siva will bestow His Grace. When those doing penance do not easily receive it, what is the point of giving it to those who do not even asking for it? The soul first reaches out to Siva to remove sufferings and satisfy desires in this worldly existence. Siva will definitely give what you ask, you just have to talk to Him. Only that His response might not always be in the form that you can comprehend. We must raise our level of awareness and consciousness to be able to perceive His response. The soul which keeps asking for solutions to worldly problems finally understands the worldly existence itself is the problem. Just as every month one pays dues for the house or car or other things, the soul keeps on paying its dues. The burden is released only when the entire loan is repaid. Similarly, the solution to worldly problems ends only when the karmic dues are paid. This is difficult to understand at first, so He lets us experience the world and continue paying the monthly installments. There is no other God with whom one can talk, like with Sivam. Just as we need to speak with each native speaker in their own language, the language of Sivam is Compassion.
So, to help the soul extricate itself from the clutches of the ego, He gives a practical learning by giving the senses and the body to the soul. When the soul suffers from these experiences, He comes in the form of a guru and teaches the way to elevate oneself not only from suffering but also from the ego.
Definition of success
A man was walking in the jungle when he notices a tiger. He runs like a madman out of fear and stumbles on to a well. He descends into the well and holds onto a branch on the side of the well. He then notices that two rats are gnawing at the branch, the tiger is hungrily looking at him from the top and there are poisonous snakes at the bottom of the well. Suddenly a drop of honey falls on his lips from a tree above and for a moment, he forgets everything except the taste of sweet honey. Our life is also like this. The tiger chasing us is the ego, the snakes are our karma, the branch is our body created from maya and the two rats gnawing at it are day and night. Amidst all this, the superficial pleasures are the drops of honey which we assume to be life.
Why are we here? Have we done or doing anything worthy? These are questions to ask oneself, but does anyone really do it? Once we retire, others ask at what we have saved for retirement. If you say that you have saved Siva’s grace, you will be looked upon as an idiot. Only worldly success is considered as success and spiritual success is not even considered. It is indeed difficult to not only live in this society but also live apart from it. Society does not considered devotion as success. We should learn to place our successes and defeats at the Holy feet of Siva.
The forgotten treasure
Once a king in disguise was riding through the forest and saw an old man cutting wood. The old man was carrying the wood with much difficulty. The king asked him about his sons to which the old man replied that his sons had gone afar for different reasons. So, he had to cut wood and sell the charcoal to support his wife. The king then went away and instructed his minister to give 100 sandalwood trees so that the old man can live his life in comfort. After a few years, the king met the old man and was surprised to see that he was still living in poverty. He asked the old man what he did with the 100 trees that he received. The old man said that, he had cut them down as usual to make charcoal and sell it for a living. The king was aghast and told the old man that the trees were sandalwood trees and that each one was worth a fortune. Fortunately, there was one tree left and the king advised the old man to sell it and take care of himself. Similarly, Siva has been giving us our bodies in each birth, but we just burn it in the cremation grounds. Hence, we should take care of this body and attain Siva using the same instead of burning it away in the cremation grounds.
Taming the heart
The greatest impediment to this is our heart. If one can overcome the heart’s desires, then one can attain the successes of the spiritual plane. The heart is never always at the same place as the physical body. Only when the heart is at the same place as the body is, one will reap the benefits of one’s spiritual actions. That is why reading, listening, and singing the Tirumurais tempers the heart and brings it under control else the heart is always going behind the 5 senses. That is why even though saints and holy men live in our world with their 5 senses, the senses and their heart is under their control. Once the heart is under control, then bliss ensures. Also, when the saints see, drink, eat, smell, feel and experience they think of Sivam in all that. It is not mandatory for everyone to go the forest and dwell in caves, one can live anywhere with the control of the senses and the heart. Just as a corpse does not have any likes or dislikes, the saints live in that state.
The 9 Tandirams are a condensation of the 9 agamas out of the 28 agamas. The 28 agamas are complete in themselves and each Agamas holds the knowledge of the remaining 27 agamas. The important aspect of the Tandiram is the arrival of the Guru. The guru is the one who helps the disciple burns away the ignorance that surrounds him.
Worldly desires and suffering
Whatever one says or efforts one takes, the soul will suffer until it reaches Siva. We will say that we will be happy if we have something we wanted or when we reach a certain goal. When we attain that, more problems come up. This will continue and this will not release one from suffering. We have seen this since an age of understanding, but we are not ready to believe it. We want Siva but also at the same time hanging on to worldly desires. Siva just laughs and watches how far the soul will go before it realizes the futility of its efforts to attain desires and solve its problems. Siva never utters that He is the ultimate that needs to be realized. Talk about humility. The more the soul desires, the more it goes deeper into suffering. Starts with one’s spouse, then increases to include children, grandchildren etc., we’ll say that once we reach a goal, then we’ll pray to God but that moment never arrives because life has its own way of throwing curve balls.
Compassion, impurities, and Grace
Siva arrives once we are mature. No one needs to recommend it; He knows it by Himself. As human beings we have choices to ask from Him. What you ask for is based on your level of maturity. If one needs Siva’s grace, then one must have compassion. Sivaprakasar asks Manickavasagar to share some of the compassion that he has received from Siva and not to hoard it. Instead of asking for grace, they ask for compassion which paves the path for Grace itself. What a brilliant idea! Siva does not offer His Grace directly because the soul needs to be clean of its impurities to be able to receive His grace. That is where He comes in the form of a guru to remove those impurities. When an elder guest is coming over, we keep our house clean. imagine what should one do when we need to welcome Siva Himself?
The five actions of Siva
Creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment and revealing grace are the five actions of Siva. Why does Siva do this? Just as a cloth is washed to remove the impurities, then dried to remove the wetness and finally ironed to remove the creases, so does Siva perform these actions to remove the impurities and iron out the creases through feeding the experiences. These experiences are given in a measured way depending on the maturity of the soul. Lord Nataraja symbolizes these five actions through His dance. Tirumoolar says in one of his verses that Siva decided to stop the five actions, for him.
Daily living and cycle of life
Let us take the example of our daily lives. We wake up in the morning. Then we go around doing work and other things essential things for living. Then we go to sleep in the night. Like a prototype, our daily lives have been created to mimic the entire cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution. Though, most of the bad things are done by us during our waking hours when we are supposedly conscious and clear headed and hence suffer. Only during our sleeping hours, where are unconscious, do we escape from this suffering. As per siddhantham, morning means all states of consciousness and night, the state of sleep or unconsciousness. It is not related to day and night cycles literally.
What happens between sleep and the next day until one wakes up? This is the power of concealment where one does not remember much of what happens. Every day one goes through these 4 states of creation, preservation, dissolution, and concealment. One’s entire life is played out in this way, daily. We simply do not realize it.
Material possessions and realization
We will be attached to material possessions until we believe that they bring We will be attached to material possessions until we believe that they bring happiness. When we realize that they only give us suffering, will we keep them? That is why ‘Gynanam’ comes only through realization and never through knowledge. We all know that we will carry nothing when we die, that is knowing. Realizing this on the other hand, cannot be explained as it implies it is beyond words. Two renunciates were once travelling and they came across a river where a woman was drowning. One of them jumped into the water, carried the woman to safety and resuscitated her. The woman then thanked him and went on her way. The two renunciates then continued their journey when one of them said that it was improper of the other to have touched a woman since they were renunciates. To which, the other replied that he had already left that woman at the river bank whereas the other was still carrying her.
Nadham and Vindhu – Primeval Sound and light
Sound is special because sound comes from Nadham. Whereas sound can be heard, Nadham cannot be heard. Same applies for light. Light can be seen by eyes whereas Vindhu cannot be seen by eyes. These two forms the basis for the 36 characteristics or thatuvams. Earth is the basic and one who stays there is said to be primitive. Starting from earth, one must ascend through the steps and reach the 36th step. Most of us go back and forth between the first 26 steps or simply stay in one of them.
One should be like a cow especially when listening to discourses. The cow takes in as much as possible only to regurgitate and chew on it later. There is no point to trying to analyze while listening to discourses. One will miss the details if one does so and will have nothing to chew on later. Many of us hear through one ear and simultaneously let it go through the other ear. Doubts also will arise later while thinking of the discourses. It is important since it means that one is intelligent. The problem is when one has no doubts. There is no guarantee that one will understand the divine instructions coded in the discourses, immediately. Even Saints took their time to understand and realize the message in the discourses they received from the Gods.
The dance of Nataraja
Have we seen any other God dancing like Nataraja? In the whole world, the only God who dances is Nataraja. This is why other civilizations are in awe of this masterpiece and are paying enormous sums to either buy it or even steal it. The beauty of the cosmic dance has different meanings and captures the macro and the micro at the same time. The Lord dispenses the 5 actions as He dances. Just as rice separates milk and water, Lord Nataraja comes in the form of a Guru and releases us from this cycle. The Guru cleanses all the senses and hence releases us from accumulating karma by the action of those senses. So the karmic account does not change anymore and whatever is left, is burned under the guidance of a guru in the form of prayer and worship.
One of the important things that one must understand from TIRUMANDIRAM is that all living beings in this world from lives from its birth to its death without utterly understanding the purpose of its worldly life. Forgot realizing the purpose, most of us do not even know that there is a purpose to life. The cycle of birth and death occurs until the purpose of life is understood. As soon as the purpose is understood, Siva then start helping us.
Tirumoolar generally calls Siva as Nandi whereas others use it to refer to Siva’s mount, Nandi the bull. Here he talks about Siva’s third eye which bestows grace. He is the only God who can release one from the cycle of birth and death. The other gods bestow a lot of boons and materialistic gifts, but they cannot cut the cord of the birth-death cycle. Why? because even they must go through this cycle.
Whoever has a status, or a position of power has ego. That is why the 4 revered nayanmars shunned all positions and asked only for the blessing to pay obeisance to Siva and attain His grace. Siva is the only one without ego because He Himself does not know His position or status.
Words without experience are just that, words. They will not have the soul in them. Only those words which have the weight of experience behind them make the heart melt in compassion. That is why Siva can only be experienced and not understood. We stand apart from God when we say we pray and perform poojas whereas we are with Siva when we experience Him.
Siva, His actions, and impurities
What happens to Siva when He performs the actions? Does He get tainted by the action or the impurities? A doctor and the nurses are well protected before operating on a patient not only to not infect the patient but also to prevent from infecting themselves. These days a doctor sitting in one end of the world can operate on a patient on the other end of the world. Like a laser or ultra-violet rays which are used to disinfect surgical tools as well as operate on patients, He burns the impurities using His third eye.
The point is that the soul gets tainted by what it comes into contact. Until now, the soul was bounded by Binds and was in darkness. When Tirumoolar’s soul realized Siva, the soul was unbounded from Binds and Grace bestowed.
The basic concepts of Saiva Siddantam fit into the 3 things and differs from Vedanta. Pati (Siva), Pasu (Soul) and Binds (inanimate objects). The difference between Soul (animate) and Binds (inanimate objects) is that the Soul realizes when explained to or when it experiences whereas Binds (inanimate objects) cannot realize even when explained to or by experience.
Ignorance and realization
What ignorance or darkness does is, it hides the realization and shows itself. For example, if one goes into a dark room, the darkness hides the objects in the room but shows itself. But the ego hides the realization as well as itself. That is why most people do not even realize it because it hides itself in every thought, word, and action.
Ego is not only being hot headed but also includes worrying. When someone close or known to us is in trouble, we worry about them as if only we care about them and can solve their problems and take care of them. The point is who was caring about them before they were born? Were we doing it? Do even know where they were before they were born or where they go after their demise?
We feel sad when we are separated from someone. Again, the same question applies, you would have known that person either for a few months or for a few decades at the max. Did you feel sad before you met the person, or did you stay sad after being separated from that person? This is an identity of the ego.
Ego is not just being hot-headed or bossy or that one I can accomplish it, it has almost 7 facets. The point is Siva is ready to bestow Grace and Soul is ready to receive it, but the binds acts as a curtain preventing this transfer. The question is if God is Supreme why can’t He remove this veil and bestow grace? Yes, Siva can, but the soul is still desirous of the bonds and remains so.
Advice, Instructions and Guru.
If a normal person shares some helpful information, it is called as advice whereas when a guru shares an information with a disciple, then it is called instructions. These 30 are divine instructions that Saint Tirumoolar shares with the Saiva followers. Generally, instructions are short and hence Saint Tirumoolar has condensed the gist of the 3000 verses into these 30 verses. In life we can accept anyone as guru but depending on our maturity, Siva reveals the appropriate guru to us. In short, we should consider that Saint Tirumoolar himself is instructing us when we read these 30 divine instructions based on his experiences.
Generally, the guru shares his wisdom in short and concise words. It is our responsibility to dig deeper and find the meaning through experiences and questioning. Of course, there is indeed effort involved. If it were so easy everyone would have done it.
So, the question arises as to why one needs 3000 verses when Saint Tirumoolar as condensed it into 30 verses. The word to note here is ‘condensed’. In our day to day lives, not all have the opportunity to read 3000 verses due to various reasons. Some factors that can be changed and those that cannot be. Hence this 30 is for those who are limited by external factors outside their control and still be able to profit from this immense wisdom.
Detachment and daily life
Generally, bondage does not allow the soul to reach Siva. So, if we can cut loose from the bondage then it means we can realize Siva. There are different types of bonds that keeps us chained to this world and as we break those bonds one by one, we start nearing Siva. breaking free from the bonds does not mean physically cutting the ropes of bondage simply because bonds are more about the mental and the astral plane. Neither does it mean physically distancing oneself from those objects or people to whom one is attached. it simply means being right next to it but without any emotional attachments to it.
Each and everything that one detaches from, means one detaches from the pain and pleasure associated with those things. As said earlier, detachment does not mean physical detachment rather detachment at the emotional level. if you found a briefcase full of money, you would be happy. No imagine someone working at a bank as a teller, would he be attached to all the money that he handles daily? He will not be attached to it simply because he knows it is not his. Similarly, when one realizes that nothing in this world belongs to oneself, the attachment to those things starts to disappear.
One must be detached mainly at the emotional level and not at the physical level. Detachment at the physical level means one is abandoning his responsibilities. This explains our responsibilities towards our families, friends, Society etc., as one’s duty all the while understanding that being emotionally detached.
Between Siva, the soul and bondage, Siva and soul are animate while bondage is inanimate. The inanimate will never go attach itself to an animate entity. Only the animated soul has attached itself due to various reasons to the inanimate that is bondage. Once the soul starts realizing this truth and starts approaching Siva, the soul’s attachment with the inanimate that is bondage, starts to wear away.
Understanding Siva, soul, and bonds
We all have heard the oft repeated phrase that the body is a temple, mostly from a bodybuilding perspective. There is a deeper meaning that the physical body is being driven by the soul. But the paradox is that the soul itself is incapable of driving anything. If the soul did indeed have the capacity to drive this body, it should have had the same even before coming into the body. The soul under the influence of ego is not capable of driving the body by itself. If the body is driven by the soul and the soul is incapable of driving the body by itself, who then drives the soul itself? We will take a simple analogy of a car, a chauffeur, and the car owner. even though the car is driven by the chauffeur, the chauffeur himself follows the instructions given by the car owner. That owner is Siva.
This analogy explains the concept of Pati, Pasu and bondage. Pati being Siva, Pasu being the soul and bonds, the external things which bind the soul. The soul is looking at the external bonds and not internally at Siva. Once the soul starts looking inwards at Siva, the external bonds start breaking away.
Now the question arises that if Siva is driving the soul, then why are people good and bad things? simply because each soul depending on its intrinsic characteristics accumulated through its karma do good and bad deeds. Let us take the analogy of different light bulbs. Even though the same electric current passes through the light bulbs, depending on their intrinsic characteristics, they each emit a different color. Similarly, Siva when infuses the soul with Sakthi, the soul does different actions depending on its intrinsic karma. The important thing to note is that Siva does all this without any strings attached. It is intrinsic human nature that does all the good and bad deeds.
Cycle of birth and temperament
When two different seeds are planted in the same ground and watered with the same rain, they grow up to be different trees. Similarly, Siva’s Grace and action is common for all, but the growth is depending on each individual soul’s desires and wants. Simply put, the cycle of birth continues as long as the soul has wants and desires. Hence there is no need to ask someone if one has rebirth or not including astrologers. When one stands as a stoic without any desire or hatred, then one can conclude that one is free from the cycle of birth.
Imagine if another child ate the chocolate that you lovingly bought for your own child, what would your feeling be ? for most of us it would be a feeling of anger because we distinguish between the two children as our child and another one’s child. Once we can get over this distinction and be stoic with the fact that other child has eaten the chocolate, then one can safely assume that one is on the path to Siva. This is just a specific example and can be generalized to almost everything in life. This temperament is something that one gains when one reads, listens, and performs actions related to Siva.
Temple worship and temperament
Do souls in different levels of temperament go to temples? Yes. Even though certain souls are enlightened, they go to the temples to prevent themselves being pulled back into the vortex that is this world. It is like a vaccination against the bonds of this life. They realize this and hence go to the temples to vaccinate themselves since even they must live through the allocated time in this physical body. When enlightened souls themselves go to temples, we find extraordinary excuses to not go. Souls in all levels of temperament must go to temples and offer their obeisance in different variations. Those in Sariyai pray to the image of Siva. Those in Kriyai pray to the mantra aspect of Siva. Those in Yogam pray to the Siva that is within and those in Gnanam pray to Siva who is everywhere.
Mother and Siva
Just as a mother takes care of the toilet of her child until the child matures and can do it on his/her own, Siva takes care of the soul until the soul matures. While the mother does it only for her child, Siva removes the three impurities for all the souls over countless number of births. Even mother’s milk dries up after a few months, but Siva’s compassion is ever present. The mother while feeding, thinks of what her child will do for her when he/she grows up. But Siva does it purely out of compassion. The 63 nayanmars and many others have sung with utmost devotion and gained Siva’s compassion. But does that mean that His compassion has dried up? No. His compassion is ever present and omnipresent as He is. If it was finite, then no one other than the select few would have gained His holy feet.
Generally, in terms of scriptures or essays, one can classify into broadly two types. The first type comes from a mix of reading, learning, listening and is expressed as knowledge or understanding. the second type includes the ones mentioned in the first type but mainly is based on one’s own experience. Experience of having lived through certain moments in life and then reading/learning about it in the scriptures or learning/reading about certain moments and then experiencing it in real life. Either way, experience forms the base of the second type and everything else is just an expression of that experience and either the written or the spoken form.
TIRUMOOLAR says that Lord Nandi explained the wisdom true the nine TANDIRAMS which he then wrote down and shared with us as TIRUMANDIRAM. Having said that, these 30 divine instructions were TIRUMOOLAR’s own experience of Siva.
It is as different as writing about traveling without traveling and actually traveling and writing about it. while the 9 TANDIRAM’s talk about what Siva gives us, the divine instructions talks about what Siva gave him. So, the divine instructions talk about what he had experienced, he felt going through those moments and realizing Siva was in each one of them.
Almost all of us go through the motions in various domains of our life, be it work, be it eating, be it prayer etc., Whatever we learn, do, read etc., we do not fully realize it until we experience it ourselves. It is as different ask learning or listening to someone talk about the comfort of warm fireplace on a cold winter evening and sitting by it yourself.
Language of Lord Nandi’s wisdom
TIRUMOOLAR says that the AGAMAS were expounded by him in Tamizh. In which language were the AGAMAS expounded to him? We must remember where words form. Below are the 4 steps through which words or speech come out of the mouth.
Sukumaior the base chakra where the birth of sound occurs
Paisanti or the solar plexus chakra
Mat-imai or the heart chakra where its take emotion (pure and impure emotions)
Vaigiri is where the sound takes form as words
Depending on one’s level of maturity or consciousness, the wisdom is expounded at different levels. For the TIRUMOOLAR and saints like him, the wisdom is expounded directly at the base level (SUKUMAI). Also, wisdom is expounded by the guru based on the disciple’s level of awareness or the disciple receives wisdom based on the guru’s level of awareness. This is an important distinction to understand. If you want to play professional level sports, you will need a professional level coach. A high school coach can only take you to a certain level.
Based on this, TIRUMOOLAR cannot expound the wisdom the same way he received it from lord NANDI. Hence in tamizh, so that we all can benefit from the Lord Nandi’s wisdom.
He descends down to earth
This talks about Siva descending down to earth. Why does He descend in the first place? This is because of His compassion. Like the example of the house owner on the 4th floor and the beggar, we can understand and be helped only if He comes down to our level. When your father taught you to the ride the bicycle as a kid, you did not straightaway start with the adult bicycle. Forgot about riding it you would not even have the strength to hold it. This does not mean that your dad does not know to ride the bicycle rather he has to come down to your level to teach you.
The different forms and formless states
When He comes down to our level, He assumes three states. Formless, formless-form and form state. Depending on the devotee’s level of maturity, they can understand and realise Him in any one of the three states. Beyond all this, the final level is the perceptive level (GNANAM) which is the real or truth level of Siva. This is called the SWAROOPAM level. What we see with our eyes is the ROOPAM (FORM) and what we see with experience is SWAROOPAM.
This is fundamentally different from the other religions which either have idol worship or against idolatry. What they fail to understand is that religion is for us humans and not for GOD. People who have addictions cannot be treated in the same way as those who do not have them. Some can adapt and evolve to abrupt changes, others perish. One cannot prescribe the same type of treatment to all irrespective of their base symptoms.
Ego and the soul
When the soul aspires for materialistic and physical wants, it gets registered in the Maya. Adisakthi then conceals (TIRODANAM Sakti) Siva and reveals to the soul all the materialistic things until the soul realizes the futility and matures.
There are two tragedies in life. One is to not get what you want. The other is to get it.
Bruce Springsteen
What TIRODANAM does is that it gives what you ask or want but hides the impact of it. We all want beautiful wives or husbands and most of us get it, but almost all of us know what happens after the initial honeymoon phase gets over and reality strikes. The person who coined the phrase – beauty lies within’ knew what he was talking about. This looks very stupid and nerdy while explaining, but only those who have experienced it, can relate to it. Funnily enough, only few realise the futility of this exercise, but most do not and keep going back for that high. This explains a lot of pleasure-seeking behaviours we exhibit in our day to day lives. Stuck in an endless loop of instant gratification.
The reason for the experiences is to understand the ego and polish the soul just as one sands wood to create a smooth finish. Once the soul matures to a certain level and without ego, TIRODANAM starts to become TIRU-ARUL. Sakti which concealed SIVA and revealed the world now starts to conceal the world and reveal SIVA.
Tirumandiram is the 10th chapter in the 12 chapters of the ‘Tirumurai’ even though it had been written long before the other chapters. The order of the chapters is not based on seniority or antecedents but in a logical way which makes sense to the reader. The first 7 deal with the ways of living and getting what you want From God. From the 8th chapter the focus totally shifts 2 attaining God himself.
Tirumurai
The point to note is that in the ancient times people used to place their queries or problems in front of the King as a request. These were called ‘MURAIS’. Similarly, if you want to ask something to God, then instead of asking in your own words it is much better to place your request, queries, or problems in the form of TIRU MURAIS. why not profit from the previous experience and the beautiful verses which is a better way to reach out to God.
‘Tiru’ means with respect or Holy, hence you will find a lot of places as well starting with the same. It is not just a mark of respect while mentioning someone’s name.
Humility
Even though Siva is beyond all understanding and limits his compassion and benevolence is such that He descends to our level so that we can rise up the ladder of realization along with Him. being bigger or higher is not important but despite being the One, His humility shows through when He comes down to our level to help us.
what will we get if we pray to Him? the opportunity and the possibility of praying to him itself is the blessing, what more can one ask for? Getting to this level is a boon especially being born in Tamil Nadu and even more as a SAIVITE. The opportunity to pray to Him is the result of past karmic actions and the result of present karmic actions will give us the opportunity to continue to pray to him in future births until we realize Him.
The sage Tirugnanasambandar says that we neither know the day of our death nor the day of birth. why does he mention day of birth? What does it really mean? The explanation is that even though we all are alive, real birth starts when we realize that Siva is The One.
Looking within
All the Saints attribute all the best qualities to Him and the faults to themselves. (The person who has reached the pinnacle of religion is a ‘Gnani’ whereas the person who has transcended religion is called ‘Moni’). The biggest gift that we have is that Siva has placed Himself within us and we must realize Him.
We all know how to get from one place to another externally, how to look at things externally, understand things externally. but we do not know how to look within ourselves, do self-reflection and pose the toughest questions to ourselves. this requires not only patience, effort, and practice but also guidance in the form of a Guru. this is essentially what yoga means. Ashtanga yoga talks about 8 steps to realize God.
Saivam
The concept of a God who punishes exists only in other religions and not in Saivam. This is a religion whose founding principle is based on reasoning and science. This is a religion that is in harmony with nature and one with the universe. That is why despite years and years of conquest, plunder, desecration, and many other atrocities, it has not only survived but also absorbed the invaders. That is why religion is a bounded word to encompass the boundless that is Saivam, simply due to our level of maturity.
Real meaning of education
What is the point of education if it does not lead to God? Many things learnt in the classroom are of no use in most of the real-life situations. Trigonometry certainly will not help you when you are being chased by a lion except maybe if you must calculate how to climb a tree. But then it would be too late, and you will already be cat food. If your ego grows along with the degrees after your name, then you are going farther and farther away from God. Whereas the more you learn makes you understand that you know less and less, and realize the omnipotent, you are getting a real education.
Siva, the world, and the physical body
God did not create the world, the body etc., from himself. God is an animate entity and the world etc. are inanimate entities. God is the potter who makes the pots from the earth. He created the world and the living beings from Maya. Saivam talks about three reasons. The earth is the first reason, the potter – the principle reason and the pot – the second reason. This does not mean maya is apart from Siva. It is part of His power (Sakti). Rain can be considered as clean maya, when it falls on the roof it becomes unclean maya. When it flows into the ground as polluted sewage, it becomes prakriti maya. And our bodies are made from it. One who wins over the physical body is the real saint.
The body was given to realize our desires and because our desires are shallow, it was made from prakriti maya. Your body can be made only based on what you desire. You can be taken only to a hotel where you like to eat. Despite all this, He has given us ‘nadam’ (tone or words). It starts from base of the spine in the ‘mooladaram’ chakra and rises to the heart until which it is pure. Depending on the purity or the impurity of the heart it mixes and then comes out as voice through the throat. One with a pure heart has pure words and those with an impure heart, impure words.
The saints say that ‘nadam’ is the base for the words and God has sent out His guidance in the universe. The saints must tune themselves into God’s frequency and then God’s wisdom comes out as Holy scriptures from their mouth.
Significance of ‘Cith Muthirai’
This is the gesture where the index finger touches the thumb forming a closed loop while the three other fingers are upright. Siva as Lord Dakshinamurthy transmits the knowledge to the Rishis using this mudra. No words are spoken but everything is via consciousness. This hand gesture is also held during meditation.
The thumb is the Pati (Siva) who guides us. The forefinger on index finger which points to the soul is the Pasu. The ring finger is karma to signify the results of past actions. the little finger is maya. In Hindu marriages, the bride and groom walk around the holy fire holding each other by their little fingers. The middle finger which despite being the tallest, is of no use other than insulting others and signifies the ego.
God and experience – 5 senses
Everything we experience, the experience via the God who resides within us. It is only us who experience whereas God does not need to. Other religions talk about God being the one who points or teaches the way to salvation. Saivam says God not only points the way but also walks with you along the path. Therefore, we have 5 physical senses to experience our desires through the materialistic world and realise its transient nature.
Learning the 3000 songs
There is a fire burning inside us. It is a steam engine to which we are feeding food to run our body. If there is no heat, then it can be assumed we are dead. If there is more heat, then there is some anomaly with the body. He has put this heat inside our body on precise calculations. Similarly, 3000 songs are those that were necessary to share the messages required. But the point is, based on the maturity of individuals, the meaning will be different.
On the question of learning the wisdom of 3000 songs, Tirumoolar says that learning 30 songs of the experienced teachings contains the quintessence of Tirumandiram. This is to get us on the path and not an excuse for laziness. ‘Upadesam’ means explaining one’s own experience.
In Praise of Siva
Characteristics of Siva
Only Siva has 8 attributes, all others have three. (rajasic – Kinetic, tamasic – inertia, sattvic- potential). Siva is called NIRGUNAN, meaning without attributes because He does not have these three attributes. All entities have attributes else it will be sorcery / magic.
Measuring Siva
Tirumoolar says that there is none above Siva let alone His equal. As the story goes, even Brahma and Vishnu could not find neither the beginning nor the end of Siva. So, when Brahma and VISHNU themselves could not fathom Siva, what chance do we have? If at all you still have doubts, SAIVAM says that you could go find out the truth yourselves and you will come back when you are ready. No conditions apply.
The matted hair God
The matted hair does not imply matting due to dirt and not washing the hair over a period. Rather it is due to accumulation of all the chastity, righteousness etc. which has not been cleaned. This is a trademark of many holy sadhus who wear the matted hair as a mark of respect to Lord Siva. Apparently, this is also linked to the matted hairstyles in the Caribbean which was brought to the Indies by the Indians. (brought by the English as slaves to work in the sugar plantations)
Also, all other gods and Lords wear a jewelled crown on their head to signify their position whereas Siva wears a Crown of matted hair. A Crown is a mark of a position that is given and hence can be taken away as well whereas Siva does not need an actual Crown to signify His position.
Experiencing Siva
Not all people need to be told in the same way for them to understand. For some, it is enough to explain, and they will understand whereas for others He must be strict. More like a good cop bad cop routine. All said and done, one cannot hope to understand Siva, one can only realise Him. It is like reading and looking at photos of a tasty dessert and eating it oneself. Until then, one cannot experience neither His compassion nor His greatness.
Siva’s compassion
Why do we talk about His compassion? When it comes to love, no love is greater than the love of a mother, for it is immeasurable. Even the most deathless love dies someday, but a mother’s love is forever. Even animals have that motherly instinct as we have seen from so many natgeo programs. Here Tirumoolar says that even though a mother’s love has no parallels, Siva’s love surpasses even that. The realised Saints who had quantified so many things were not able to quantify Siva’s compassion.
Greatness of Vedas and Agamas
VEDAS are generic whereas AGAMAS are specific. The SAIVA AGAMAS form the foundation of SAIVA SIDDANTAM. While the Vedas talks about general applications of principles of human life in different domains, AGAMAS prepare the terrain for those who have matured in the Vedas and enables them to reach Siva. Vedas are for those who are on the path to maturity and AGAMAS is for those who have already matured. We should not assume that everything in the Vedas can be applied to everyone.
On Ahimsa: Non-injury / Non-violence
On the topic of nonviolence and non-injury, Hindu belief system is a little bit more flexible as it says do what you want to but never leave God. It believes that no matter what, one should never leave God and that the soul will realize its mistake and come back to the path of Ahimsa certainly at some point in time. The idea is like different strokes for different folks. Even though one might be impure in terms of food habits and other vices, be pure and clean at least when you pray to Siva.
The perishable nature of the physical body
Our day-to-day lives are focused on solving our day-to-day problems and hence we do not have much time for God. Only when our focus and thoughts shift to the bigger question of the perishable nature of our body, the day-to-day problems resolve themselves. Nobody can or will accompany you on your death no matter how dear one is. The saints realized this, and their lives were focused on not only understanding the purpose of life but also the nature of death. They realized that Siva is the only way to break free from the clutches of death and hence from the circle of life and death.
As we progress through the various stages of maturity, we go through the cycles of birth and death. this progress is based not just understanding but the realization and subsequent withdrawal from worldly pleasures by one’s own intent. Once the soul reaches full maturity in the positive renunciation of worldly pleasures, understanding the purpose of this life and the realization of Siva as the absolute truth, the cycle of birth and death is broken.
Siva, the worlds, and the souls
One must understand that the world has no utility for Siva and Siva has no utility for the world but we as living beings need these two to transcend the transient nature of life and attain Siva. Siva is not anything (not nothing) but nothing is without Siva. Siva is not only in everything, but Siva is beyond everything.
Languages of God’s wisdom
There are lots of debates around the language in which God shared the knowledge. But it must be understood that God does not teach through words. Words can only explain up to a limit beyond which they cannot express the emotions. God shares His wisdom implicitly (sukumai) through vision and consciousness and the saints then expressed this in the native language. Depending on each person’s level of maturity, the wisdom is imparted in different ways. Only at the mutable level (Vaigari), this information becomes words.
Agamas have been taught in both Sanskrit and Tamizh as mentioned in Tirumandiram, but the most important, is the message of realizing Siva and not the language itself. Tirumandiram is agamas in tamizh and is the same wisdom that Siva shared with Parvati. Tirumoolar gives this as a gift in tamizh and asks us to engrave it into our hearts and follow them.
Tirumoolar was given the wisdom of 9 agamas by Lord Nandi. Even though only 9 were given to Tirumoolar, the 9 Tandirams contains the messages of the 28 agamas.
Tirumurai
Tirumandiram means holy garland of mantirams (hyms) written in tamizh by Tirumoolar. It is the tenth of the Tirumurais (tamizh saiva scriptures). It covers a vast and dazzling array of topics compiled into 9 chapters along with a preface chapter.
Preface (In praise of God) deals with Greatness of Vedas and agamas, History of tirumoolar, Concept of Guru etc.
Tandiram One deals with Philosophy, dharma, ethics, transient nature of the physical, body, education, learning etc.
Tandiram Two deals with Siva’s glory, His divine acts, patience etc.
Tandiram Three deals with Vasi yoga. (to note that this is different from Patanjali’s Ashtanga yoga even though they both were contemporaries)
Tandiram Four deals with the chakras etc.
Tandiram five deals with the various branches of Saivam and the four paths of Saiva siddhantham.
Tandiram six deals with Guru-disciple relationship, actions etc.
Tandiram seven deals with Siva linga worship, greatness of holy men, rituals etc.
Tandiram eight deals with the various levels of soul’s experiences
Tandiram nine deals with holy ‘namasivaya’ mandiram, Siva’s cosmic dance, the state of samadhi etc.
It is the magnum opus of the Saiva Agamas which are the part of the Saiva Siddhantham tradition. If the Vedas are the milk then Tirumandiram is the sweetened condensed milk.
Tirumoolar has given us the divine wisdom that he received from Lord Nandi (Gatekeeper to Mount. Kailash where Siva and Parvati reside) for the benefit of all. Sekkizhar(one of the 63 nayanmars – Holy tamil Saivite saints) says that the poison of birth has seeped into all living beings and to remove that, the holy garland of mandirams has been written down by Tirumoolar.
How it was found
King Raja Raja Chola 1 (985-1013 CE) had heard a few verses of the Tevaram and tasked a priest, NambiAndar Nambi to find out the source. NambiAndar Nambi found the half-eaten palm leaf manuscripts in a chamber in the Thillai Nataraja Temple but the temple priests objected to its removal. They said that the manuscripts shall be taken out only by the venerated saints who lived many centuries ago. King Raja Raja Chola 1 then conscrecated the statues of the saints and carried them in procession to the temple was finally able to retrieve the manuscripts. NambiAndar Nambi arranged them in a collection which came to be called as Tirumurais. (A 12 volume collection of sacred hymns of tamil Saivaite siddantam)
History of Tirumoolar
Tirumoolar whose actual name was Sundaranathar, was one of the 8 sages who received the divine wisdom directly from Lord Nandi. While coming down from Mount Kailash to visit Sage Agasthiyar who lived in the Podhigai hills in the south, He is said to have visited various holy places in India. Also, He is one of the few saints who have seen the cosmic dance of Siva in the form of Nataraja in Thillai (Chidambaram in Sanskrit, a place in tamil nadu).
Tirumoolar then reaches Thiruavaduthurai (a place in South India) which was a small unknown town. Moolan was a cowherd who had died, and the cows were circling and licking him trying to wake him. Tirumoolar transmutes into his body on seeing the sadness of the cows and then guides the cows to their homes. He comes back to find that his original body has mysteriously disappeared and understands that it is one of Siva’s acts. Tirumoolar then writes down Tirumandiram from the body of Moolan and hence the name Tirumoolar. He wrote around 3000 verses, One every year.
He is one of the 18 venerated Siddar’s. He is one of the Gurus of the Nandinatha lineage which is now based out of Kauai Island in the United states of America. Tirumoolar attained the Siva consciousness at the Thillai Nataraja Temple.
The basic concepts
Pasu – Pati- Paasam
Pasu means souls and is used to refer to all animals including humans.
Lord Siva is the Pati.
Paasam is the bond that binds the soul to the transient and hides it from realizing Siva.
Paasam has three impurities
Anava – Ego
Kanma – Karma
Maya – Primordial matrix
Ego
The ego is the ‘I’ which thinks itself to be and know everything.
Karma
The result of past actions which must be balanced in this life or in the next lives depending on the karmic balance accumulated.
Maya
The primordial matrix by which the soul experiences and understands the transient nature of this life.
Existence of God and life
Does God exist or not has been debated by various religions and certain have concluded that life is an amalgamation of the elements and that there is no soul, that God does not exist, and that accumulation of wealth and enjoyment of pleasures are the only goal of life. There are those who accept not only the above but also believe in souls. Then there are those who not only believe in the world and souls but also in God. This is how one can classify beliefs.
Those who say world exists, but God does not, cannot see God. Those who say both the world and God exists also cannot see God. Only those who say world does not exist, but God does, can see Him. This has been beautifully expounded in Tirumandiram.
Understanding God
The agamas expound the relation between Siva and the soul. Why is this soul unable to realise Siva? With a pure conscience, we must accept that we believe in God because we have been told so from a young age that God will poke your eyes if you say or do something bad. So, the impression has formed in our mind that God is someone who goes around with a stick to poke our eyes when we do or say something bad. And this has installed a fear of God as someone who punishes us.
But it is not in God to punish anyone because He does not know how to. A cake does not know how to be sour. If it tastes sour, then the fault lies with the tongue and not the cake. So, if someone says that it tastes sour, then that person has some problem.
God is the one with a benevolent heart and He does not know to punish nor condemn. Then the question arises – why do we suffer?
On the question of suffering
Why do we suffer? What is difference between Saivam and Buddhism / Jainism? Buddhism says suffering comes from desire. It is a good knowledge that has already been expounded in « Tirukural » by Thiruvalluvar.
Anyone who proposes a solution without analysing or understanding the root cause must be questioned. If you go to a doctor with a headache and if he immediately starts writing a prescription for your headache, his degree needs to be verified. A doctor must analyse the reasons for the headache before prescribing the correct medicine. Any ailment has an intermediate cause and the root cause. Fever is not a disease but a symptom of a disease. This principle of root cause analysis is applied across many domains and is the root of Saivam philosophy. Therefore, desire is an intermediate symptom and the root cause is Ignorance.
A religion based on first principles
Saivam says that one should remove the root cause that is ignorance instead of only focusing on the intermediate cause that is desire. Other religions talk about intermediate causes whereas Saivam talks about the root cause because its Leader is the Supreme, the foremost Being and The One God. All religions and their beliefs at some point fits into Saivam as its subset. This is not to uphold, justify or publicize simply because we fall into the Saivam fold, but simply because it is the Ultimate Truth.
Saivam is the only religion which talks about God and the connected souls by expounding the 36 tatuvams (Principles). Vainavam (Vaishnavam in Sanskrit) is next which expounds 25 principles. There are indeed differences in Saivam on how to realise God. Saivam differs on the perspective as well as explaining the concept of The First principle. No other religion neither has such a perspective nor such an explanation. it is not enough to simply say this, but one must prove the same. The strongest support comes from our thothirams(praise) and sathirams(science). The beauty of Tirumandiram comes from the fact that the praise for God and science are weaved together as one single scripture. Its significance cannot be explained in one session or even one single school year. Only when one continuously experiences its nectar does one comprehend its profoundness, Siva’s bliss and its Ultimate Siva Realisation.
The limitless wealth that is Saivam
Saivam is called king of religions because it has answers to all questions. Single book and other religions are creating a ruckus with just a single book. Ask them anything, the response is to point to that single book. They are focused on giving answers like giving a hungry man a fish. What Saivam does is it teaches a man to fish so that he never goes hungry again. And it does so by using a whole library at its disposal. The problem though is we will not learn to fish because it is easier when you are given a fish a day. But the main point it that we simply do not know the existence of this library.
It is understandable when one is poor due to various circumstances, but it is unimaginable when one has so much wealth but does not know of its existence.
Siva realization in 4 steps
Tirumandiram mentions the path in which the soul can realise Siva in 4 steps. These explanation of these 4 steps, their features, how the soul must climb and attain each step are listed in Tirumandiram.
Sariyai (meditation), Kriyai (holy rites), Gnanam (wisdom) and yogam (union) are the four steps.
The soul is ready for bliss and Siva is ready to give the same but there is something is in between which blocks this transfer. Tirumandiram shows how to remove whatever that is blocking this transfer. This cannot be removed in one single go, but it takes steps. The soul’s goal is to overcome this obstacle and reach the Ultimate union with The One. The soul has the right, the capability and the capacity to attain the same.
You cannot breakdown that barrier in one go it takes the 4 steps to go through those barriers.
The concept of ‘Urai’ or preface
The first song in Tirumandiram is in praise of God. This song is called payiram(preface/foreword) and this precedes the 9 Tandirams. It is important for the author to explain the basic concepts in the preface as it showcases the authors grasp and command of the language. When George Bernard Shaw was asked why he wrote the foreword, he explained that the foreword was for the technical users and the rest was for others. The foreword is like a dew drop on a blade of grass because it looks small from afar but when one looks closer the entire world is within.
On Siva’s Grace
A lot of people are afraid to come to Sivan temples because they feel that He will give them grace. As if Grace is easily attainable and he is just handing it out like sweets on Halloween. They go to him for wealth but not for grace. Let us assume that a gathering is hearing a speech by renowned speaker and Siva comes over and asks who wants grace? Most of will say we have work at home or other lame excuses and point to the speaker on the stage saying that he was the one talking about grace so you should take him first. we will finish our jobs at home and come later.
God will not hand out grace that easily simply because he gives that what is useful for you and me and not what is useless in the present level of consciousness. Giving grace to us is like giving a gold-plated pen to a child. The child will not know its value.
Tirodanam – Power of Concealment
What is tirodanam? Why do we need it? In our day-to-day lives we are immersed by our problems and it is normal that we go to God asking for solutions to our temporary problems. does He give us what we ask him for? Yes. He might not give it immediately simply because you are not ready for it.
When Appar (One of the 63 Holy saints called nayanmars) asked for deliverance, Siva asked him to come to Tirunallur (a place in tamil nadu). Appar was dismayed and his first verse shows that he was overcome with grief from being separated from Siva. When he reached the place, Siva was waiting for him there and gave him deliverance. Then Appar sings the second verse where he understands that he was not ready to receive the divination from Siva before. Siva being benevolence Himself, had removed all the obstacles from Appar’s path before reaching Tirunallur so that Appar’s cup was empty to receive his Lord’s grace.
Whatever you ask, good or bad, He will give it to you. Will he warn you? No. Giving what do you ask for while hiding its impact is called Tirodanam (the power of concealment). Giving without hiding the impact is called ‘tiru-arul’ (Realisation). Our level of consciousness is such that we still blame him even when He gives what we ask for.
Kanma malam – Karma
Just as a letter sent by one to himself, reaches him without fail, the fruits of our actions will come back to us with certainty. All these past and present actions (positive and negative) are letters that we have sent to ourselves. We just do not remember when we sent them.
God just makes sure that the letter reaches the correct person. Here it is important to note that, all our actions accumulate Karma even in the present life. Just as bad actions result in debiting the karmic account, good actions increase the karmic balance. As long as your karmic account is not zero, there will be the continuous cycle of birth and death. How does one achieve this? We will discuss this in the upcoming posts.
I heard a funny story about a hotel with a board which displayed the message « In our hotel, you can eat whatever you want, and you’ll not be billed. We will get the payment from your future generations. » One guy went in and had his fill. And while he was about to leave, the waiter came over and placed a bill on his table.
This guy was livid and said, “You have written outside that my future generations will be charged but now you are asking me to pay? “
The waiter replied, “Sir, this bill is your grandfather’s bill.”
Relation between Guru and Maya and karma
Maya and karma have been given to us by God and ego is the impurity which we are holding onto by ourselves. The maya must be removed by our own actions and God will not interfere. He has given us the five senses and this body so that we can experience the world and understand its transience. Our knowledge and understanding has three defects. we understand only through explanations, through differences and through experiences. Once we have succeeded in removing the maya, God will then remove the karma and ego.
Why God does not remove my Karma and ego?
As long as we have wants and desires, we will be reborn. What is the point of taking someone to a restaurant if he does not like to eat? Similarly, when one has no more wants and desires what is the point of rebirth for him. This is where God intervenes to remove him from the cycle of birth and death.
So this explains the fact that as long as you have wants and desires that is no usefulness in God removing your Karma because you will still be under the illusion of Maya and continue to do acts that add to your karma. But it is not necessary to clear your karmic account to go to the next level. this is where a guru comes in.
A guru is not someone you go looking for, but someone who appears when you are ready. Even though the Sea is huge, one cannot drink from it. A nectar is a drop compared to the ocean, but its sweetness is beyond measure.
Then how does one know whether one is ready for a Guru or not? Does someone on the exterior recommend a guru? No. Only the One who sits in your heart knows when the fruit has ripened. You can lie to others but when you lie to yourself, The One within you smiles sarcastically.
Why God must come down to our level to help us
Let us take an example of a person living on the third or fourth floor of a house and a beggar arrives at his gate. the person will not throw down his keys and ask the beggar to come up to his house. Rather he will come down to the ground floor to meet the beggar and help him. Similarly, God in his compassion comes down to our level because We can benefit from Him only when He is at our level.
The specialty of Saivam is that there are two kinds of grace which is not found in any other religions. There is another specialty, but we will talk about it later. Other religions talk about Salvation as the only grace whereas Saivam Talks not only about realization but death also as a grace. No other religion neither talks about this nor knows about this. This is called ‘tirodanam’ Sakti or power of concealment.
Paasam a trois impuretés
Anava – Ego
Kanma – Karma
Maya – Matrice primordiale
Ego
Comprender a Dios
Mientras tengamos deseos y deseos, renaceremos.
